Storing Concentrates to Preserve Terpenes
Heat, light, oxygen and moisture: how storage affects aroma and stability.
Educational overview only. This guide is not operating instructions and gives no solvent quantities, pressures or procedures. Solvent-based extraction belongs only in licensed, engineered, code-compliant facilities with trained staff.
Terpenes are volatile and cannabinoids slowly degrade, so good storage keeps flavor, texture and potency intact for longer.
The main enemies
- Heat: it speeds up terpene loss and texture changes; sauce, for example, can separate or "auto-butter." Store cool.
- Light: UV degrades cannabinoids and terpenes. Use opaque or UV-resistant packaging and keep it in the dark.
- Oxygen: it causes oxidation and darkening. Use airtight containers with little headspace, and keep opening them to a minimum.
- Moisture: it raises microbial risk and changes texture. Let cold containers warm to room temperature before opening so condensation doesn't form.
Practical themes
- Glass or other inert, airtight containers
- Cool, dark, stable storage. Refrigeration or freezing is common for longer storage, handled carefully to avoid condensation
- Labeling with batch, date and COA reference for traceability and FIFO rotation
