Breakage, Spills & Dropped Jars: Safety and Compliance
Safety first, containment, waste logging and destruction per seed-to-sale rules, inventory reconciliation and SOP updates.
Accidents happen in every lab. What matters is that people stay safe and the records stay accurate.
Safety first
- Stop work and keep people clear; follow your emergency procedures.
- Wear the PPE your SOP requires (cut-resistant gloves for glass, eye protection).
- If a spill involves flammable material or solvent, follow your facility's emergency and ventilation procedures and never improvise.
Contain and clean
Use your spill kit and approved cleaning materials. Collect broken glass in a puncture-resistant container.
Log the waste
Weigh and record the lost product as waste in your seed-to-sale system with the reason, date and staff involved. Store and destroy it exactly as your state requires (often rendering unusable and witnessing or recording destruction).
Reconcile inventory
Adjust inventory the same day so physical stock and system records match. Unexplained discrepancies are a common inspection finding.
Learn from it
Ask why it happened: shelving, trays, carrying method, workspace layout. Update the SOP and retrain if needed.
Questions
How do I record a dropped jar of concentrate?
Weigh what was lost, log it as waste with a reason in your seed-to-sale system, store and destroy it per state rules, and reconcile inventory the same day.
