What to Do When a Batch Fails Lab Testing

Quarantine, root cause analysis, remediation options where legally allowed, documentation and regulator notification per state rules.

Educational overview from my experience, not legal or operating instructions. Example numbers are marked as examples. No solvent procedures, temperatures or pressures are given. Always follow your state cannabis regulations, local fire code, equipment manufacturer guidance and your own approved SOPs.

A failed test is stressful, but a calm, documented response protects consumers, your license and the rest of your inventory.

1. Quarantine immediately

Physically separate and label the batch, and update its status in your seed-to-sale/inventory system so it can't be sold or transferred.

2. Confirm what failed

Review the certificate of analysis and the sampling record. Some states allow a retest under specific conditions; follow your state's rules exactly.

3. Find the root cause

Look at input material, environment, equipment, cleaning records, consumables and handling. Use a structured method (5 Whys, fishbone) and record it.

4. Decide the disposition

Options may include remediation where your state explicitly allows it for that failure type, conversion to another permitted product, or destruction. What is allowed varies widely by state, so check the regulations and, when in doubt, ask the regulator.

5. Notify and document

Some states require reporting failed tests or remediation plans to the regulator within set timeframes. Keep the full record: results, decisions, approvals, and CAPA (corrective and preventive actions).

6. Prevent the repeat

Update SOPs, train staff, and watch the related KPI (test pass rate) for the next several batches.

Questions

Can a failed cannabis batch be remediated?

Only where your state allows it for that specific failure type, and often with regulator notification or approval. Some failures require destruction.

Do I have to report a failed test?

Many states require it. Check your state rules for timelines and forms.
