Safe, documented, repeatable
Quality and safety systems from manufacturing, applied to the extraction lab.
C1D1 environments (general overview)
Hydrocarbon extraction is done in rooms classified as Class I, Division 1 hazardous locations, meaning flammable vapors may be present during normal operation. Typical controls include engineered ventilation and exhaust, gas detection with alarms, intrinsically safe or explosion-proof electrical equipment, fire suppression, and certification and inspection by a professional engineer and the local fire authority. Closed-loop systems should be listed or peer-reviewed by an engineer.
GMP & SOPs
Good Manufacturing Practice means controlled, documented, repeatable processes. I have developed SOPs for lab and extraction operations, trained staff on equipment operation, SOPs and safety, and maintained department documentation and MSDS/SDS records.
QA/QC
- Coordinating third-party product testing and keeping accurate records of test results to support compliance and product release
- Batch record review, in-process inspection and product release QA
- Deviation management, CAPA and root cause analysis
- Earlier QA work at Whirley Drink-Works under GMP and SQF, including 5S projects and training new QC specialists
Safety culture
- Lockout/tagout, chemical handling, spill and emergency response
- Respiratory protection and PPE, fire safety and first aid
- Process safety management (PSM) and HAZOP thinking applied to pressurized solvent systems
