Extraction Methods

CO₂ Extraction

General industry overview
This page is a general industry overview. My specialty is closed-loop hydrocarbon extraction and distillation, not CO₂ systems.

Supercritical CO₂ extraction uses carbon dioxide held above its critical point (about 31 °C and 74 bar), where it behaves partly like a gas and partly like a liquid. Adjusting pressure and temperature changes how strongly it dissolves different compounds.

Characteristics

  • Tunable selectivity: subcritical (cooler, lower pressure) runs favor terpenes, and supercritical runs pull more cannabinoids and heavier compounds.
  • Non-flammable solvent: it leaves no residual solvent, but the equipment runs at very high pressure.
  • Post-processing: CO₂ crude usually needs winterization and is often distilled. It is widely used for vape oils and ingredient-grade extracts.
  • Trade-offs: high equipment cost and longer run times compared with hydrocarbon systems.
