My hands-on work
Terpene separation is part of the sauce & diamonds workflow I run.
HTFSE (High Terpene Full Spectrum Extract) is the aromatic, liquid fraction left behind after THCa crystallizes out of a hydrocarbon extract. It holds most of the terpenes plus minor cannabinoids, and it carries the strain's flavor and aroma.
How the separation happens
- As THCa crystallizes, the remaining liquid gets richer and richer in terpenes. Over time the two phases separate naturally, with solid crystals below and amber liquid above.
- The HTFSE is decanted or drained off the crystals and can then be gently purged of residual solvent.
- It can be sold on its own (terp sauce), blended back with diamonds, or used in vape and infused products.
Why it matters
Terpenes are volatile, so they evaporate and degrade with heat, oxygen and light. Cold handling, low-temperature purging and quick packaging help keep a profile true to the original plant. A good HTFSE fraction is often what sets a premium live resin product apart.
