My hands-on work
Crystallization of organic compounds is my specialty. The diamonds in my gallery are my crystalline work.
THCa diamonds are large crystals of nearly pure tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCa) that form out of a supersaturated hydrocarbon extract. Crystallization is basic organic chemistry: when a solution holds more dissolved compound than it can at equilibrium, molecules arrange themselves into an ordered crystal lattice and drop out of solution.
Key concepts
- Supersaturation: the driving force behind crystal growth. It is controlled through how concentrated the extract is and how much solvent is left in it.
- Nucleation vs. growth: nucleation is the birth of new crystal seeds; growth is existing crystals getting larger. Many nucleation sites give many small crystals ("sugar"), and few sites with slow, steady conditions give large diamonds.
- Solvent ratio: the balance between residual solvent and extract affects how fast THCa comes out of solution. More solvent generally slows things down and favors larger, cleaner crystals; less solvent speeds up nucleation.
- Pressure & temperature: in sealed vessels the solvent slowly off-gasses as conditions change. Gentle, stable temperatures and a gradual pressure release encourage slow, even growth. Swings in either one encourage fresh nucleation.
- Time: crystallization is usually a process of days to weeks, not hours.
Common approaches
- Jar tech: extract is sealed in pressure-rated jars and left to crystallize slowly, with periodic, controlled venting.
- Miners / crystallization reactors: purpose-built pressure vessels (often called "miners") allow larger batches, tighter temperature control and safer venting than jars.
- Separation & washing: once grown, the crystals are separated from the terpene-rich mother liquor (the sauce). They can be washed and purged, sold as diamonds, or reunited with the terps as "sauce & diamonds."
This is a conceptual overview. Pressure vessels holding hydrocarbon solvent are hazardous and must be rated, engineered and run under proper safety controls.
