Extraction Methods

Solventless (Ice Water Hash, Rosin, Dry Sift)

General industry overview
I have solventless experience. This page gives a general overview of the main solventless techniques.

Solventless extracts separate and concentrate the plant's resin glands (trichomes) using only mechanics, water, cold, heat and pressure, with no chemical solvent.

Ice water hash (bubble hash)

Fresh-frozen or dried material is gently agitated in ice water, which makes the trichome heads brittle so they break off. The water is passed through a series of micron-rated filter bags, and the collected resin is dried (often freeze-dried) to make hash. The best grades are often called "full melt."

Rosin pressing

Hash, sift or flower is pressed between heated plates inside filter bags. Heat and pressure squeeze out a translucent resin. Hash rosin made from high-grade ice water hash is considered a top-tier solventless product, and it can be "cold cured" to develop badder-like textures.

Dry sift

Dried material is tumbled or gently worked over fine screens to separate trichomes mechanically. It is pressed, sold as kief, or refined into higher grades.
